In a span of 48 hours, the Mountain View giant dropped a bombshell new AI model, staged a celebrity-studded Pixel 11 launch event, and sent shockwaves through its DeepMind division. Meanwhile, the broader AI ecosystem kept spinning — OpenAI lost two more executives, Twitch quietly began training Amazon’s models on every stream, and Anthropic gave its Chrome extension a major upgrade. Let’s dive into everything that happened.


1. Gemini 3.7 Flash: Google’s Most Intelligent Workhorse Yet

Just three weeks after releasing Gemini 3.6 Flash, Google is already back with a major upgrade. Gemini 3.7 Flash landed on August 13th, and by every metric, it’s a dramatic step forward.

The new model delivers “substantial improvements across software engineering, knowledge work, and web development workflows,” Google says. But the headline numbers tell the real story:

“This release is a direct result of developer feedback and algorithmic innovations that we look forward to bringing to future models,” Google wrote in its announcement. The model “thinks more diligently, putting in more effort into multi-step planning and tool calls,” resulting in “less manual oversight and fewer retries across engineering workflows.”

For developers, 3.7 Flash is available immediately via Google AI Studio, Android Studio, and the Gemini API. Enterprise customers can access it through the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on Google Cloud.


2. Pixel 11 Launch: Tensor G6, 3,600 Nits, and a $100 Price Hike

The bad news? The Pixel 11 starts at $899 — a $100 increase over last year. But the base configuration now includes 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM, up from 128GB on the Pixel 10. Pre-orders are open, with general availability on August 20th.

Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL: The Camera Flagships

The Pro models introduce a genuinely novel feature: HiLight, an LED indicator light embedded in the camera bar. It’s a small touch, but it brings back a bit of personality that’s been missing from modern smartphones.

Google claims the Fold has the thinnest bezels ever on a foldable device and is “three times as durable” as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, with IP68 water and dust resistance. The inner display also hits 3,600 nits. It starts at $1,899 — also $100 more than last year.

New Camera Software: Magic Capture and Camera Looks

Google introduced Magic Capture, a new mode that pulls still photos and clips out of video recordings. Camera Looks are customizable presets — Minimal, Editorial, and “Digi” (mimicking digital cameras) — that change how the phone processes the photo rather than simply applying a filter. The toggle — found under Settings > Security and Privacy — controls whether “your streams, VODs, clips, stream chats, and pictures and text on your channel” can be used for “future training” of Amazon’s AI models. The setting is toggled on by default, meaning every Twitch streamer is automatically enrolled unless they manually disable it.

Notably, opting out doesn’t affect other AI-powered features like captions, recommendations, or safety tools. And if you chat on another streamer’s channel, their opt-out preference governs your chat content.


7. Anthropic Launches Claude Cowork

Anthropic updated its Chrome extension this week, rebranding it as Claude Cowork. The side-panel bot now saves chats to your history, where you can continue them outside the browser in Claude’s desktop, web, or mobile apps.
